Deck Board Spacing Calculator

Calculate how many boards fit, see the exact equalized gap, and get practical 1/16-inch board-start marks for your tape measure.

What do you want to calculate?

The distance across the deck where the boards will run. Inch entries use tape-measure fractions.

Use the board's actual face width, not its nominal lumber size.

The gap you want to get as close to as practical.

Advanced spacing constraints

Constraints are applied to the exact calculated gap, never the rounded tape value.

How the deck board spacing calculator works

The calculator evaluates every physically feasible whole-number board count. It calculates the exact equalized gap for each candidate, applies any advanced constraints to those exact values, then selects according to the chosen fit preference. Rounded tape values never participate in selection.

The gap model

N boards = N − 1 inter-board gaps. Standard spacing mode includes only the gaps between neighboring boards. It does not include edge gaps or edge margins. No edge-margin mode is implemented.

Exact math vs tape layout

The exact gap remains authoritative. The tape-measure approximation is only a convenient 1/16-inch field reference. The board-start marks below are calculated from the exact layout positions first, then independently rounded to the nearest 1/16 inch. Use those marks rather than repeatedly spacing each board with the rounded gap.

Worked example

For a 12-foot deck, 5 1/2-inch boards, and a 1/4-inch target gap, the calculator checks feasible board counts and chooses the configured best fit, then provides practical 1/16-inch board-start marks.

Planning estimate only

This calculator is for planning and estimating. Manufacturer installation instructions take precedence. Decking products can have different installation requirements, including spacing requirements related to material and conditions. This tool does not determine code compliance, structural requirements, or installation suitability.
